Custom cabinets are considered the top of the line cabinetry. First, the cost is significantly higher when compared to semi-custom/RTA cabinets or cabinet refacing. Additionally, the turnaround time is much longer since everything is made to order and there is nothing in inventory.
Lastly, with inset cabinet doors, there is a little less cabinet space when compared to semi-custom/RTA cabinets or refacing since the doors are inside the cabinets. All in all, if these are not concerns, then custom cabinets do look the best and have the highest quality materials.
Semi-custom and ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets are probably the most popular choice today due to their lower pricing, availability, and ease of installation. These pre-fabricated cabinets come in preset sizes and can essentially fit anywhere. These preset sizes have become standardized in many different dimensions and can be configured to fit your space. While they won’t have the same fitment as custom cabinets, they still have incredibly good fitment and if executed properly, can look virtually like custom cabinets.
One major difference is that these types of cabinets generally have the overlay cabinet doors, where they cover the cabinet face rather than fitting into the interior of the cabinet frame. However, to the the untrained eye, it’s nearly impossible to tell the difference. These cabinets can still maintain a very premium and high-quality feel without the cost of custom cabinets.
